Ilan Chabay is Chair of the External Research Evaluation Committee of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto, Japan and Adjunct Professor in the School of Sustainability, Arizona State University. He co-leads KLASICA (Knowledge, Learning, and Societal Change Alliance), an open international research alliance, which he founded in 2007, that aims to catalyze collective behavior change to emergent cultures of sustainability through innovative thinking, research, and practice.

After his first career in forefront research in laser physics and chemistry at the US National Institutes of Standards and Technology and Stanford University, he became associate director of The Exploratorium Science Museum (San Francisco), then founder and president of a company in Silicon Valley designing and producing interactive exhibitions for 230 museums around the world from 1984-2005. In 2006 he began his third career in sociology and sustainability science, first as Hasselblad Foundation Chair in the departments of sociology and applied IT at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University, Sweden. Subsequently, from 2012-2022, he was senior research scientist, head of strategic research initiatives, and senior investigator of the EU Real Deal project, at RIFS (formerly the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies – IASS) in Potsdam, Germany.

Ilanさんは世界的にサステイナビリティ分野の研究を牽引しつつ、日本の地域にも度々訪ずれて地域コミュニティへの造詣も深く、さらにナラティブ（Narrative）の重要性を認識しKLASICA（Knowledge, Learning, And Societal Change Alliance）を創設するなど実践も極めておられる方です。

Ilanさんは、異例のキャリアの持ち主で、米国国立標準技術研究所（NIST）とスタンフォード大学でレーザー物理学と化学の最前線の研究に従事した後、あの、エクスプロラトリアム科学博物館（サンフランシスコ）の副館長に就任。その後、シリコンバレーでインタラクティブな展示を企画・制作する会社を設立し、社長を務めたり。1984年から2005年まで、ディズニー、スミソニアン、 NASAを含めて、世界230の博物館でインタラクティブな展示を企画・制作。2006年からは社会学と持続可能科学の分野で3つめのキャリアをスタートさせ、スウェーデン、米国の大学で教鞭を執り続けてこられました。そして、ドイツのポツダムに拠点を置く研究所IASS（the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies、高等サステイナビリティ学研究所／現在は「RIFS Research Instiute for Sustainabilityに名称変更）で、サステイナビリティ研究を牽引されてこられました。日本では、総合地球環境研究所の外部評価委員委員長も務めておられます。

他方、とてもチャーミングで、周りへの気遣いがいつもあって、笑いが絶えず、他者の話に「耳を傾ける」ことをいつもされている、素敵な方です。イランさんのアドバイスも頂きながら、「道なき道」を切り拓いていきたいと思います！（代表理事 清水美香）
